We are first and foremost spirit beings. When we are born physically our spiritual selves are dormant. Which is why we must be born of the spirit or born again. Those who reject Christ or never get a chance to choose a relationship with Christ stay spiritually dormant their entire lives. Those who choose Christ, spiritually awaken and are capable of fellowship with God and begin to learn to love like Christ. Those who are spiritually dormant live by survival of the fittest rules. While those who are born of the spirit are capable of living by the rules of love. When a spiritually dormant person dies, their spirit remains dormant within the dead body. While those of the spirit leave their dead body until the time of the resurrection and live with the Father. On judgement day for the spiritually dormant, they will be given one more chance to choose a relationship with Christ or suffer the second death which is to die completely, which is to say spiritual death. The second death means they will cease to exist in any form. Which means there is no eternal suffering for non-believers only ceasing to exist waiting for them. The concept of hell is a man-made concept. The "lake of fire" is a place where spiritual beings die/cease to exist and is not a place of eternal suffering. Those who have a relationship with Christ spend eternity in resurrected bodies like the one Christ is living in now. These resurrected bodies are capable of living in God's presence.
